Dodgeball Success!

3, 2, 1... DODGEBALL!

What a great success last week's MUL Happy Hour Dodgeball game was! Thanks to a collaborative effort from MIAMI Urbanlife and the Downtown Athletic Club for helping create such an awesome event. Also, thanks to ECCO for providing a 2 for 1 after party.

Everyone had such a blast hailing balls at each other. The game got intense, people ducking, doing cartwheels, jumps and best of all laughing so hard. I can't wait for Round 2 this week. We're expecting more people so maybe double/triple the fun!

It's all very exciting. See for yourself by clicking below to watch a couple of videos from our first game. Also, if you have a chance, take a look at some of the photos that were taken.

I can't wait for this week's game. If you like to play and try something different for a Friday happy hour, this is definitely a start in that direction. Fitness, fun and drinks... does it get any better?

Urban Dodgeball for Happy Hour?!

Ok, so I've been back and forth for like 2 months now with the DAC about getting together a Downtown/Brickell Dodgeball League. Yes, I'm talking about that game we used to play as kids. They even made a movie on it a few years ago and since then it's hit the country big. We even have a national dodgeball league. How funny is that?

I'm not sure how this all came about or what might have prompted this recent obsession but I've been stuck on it for a while and what the heck? I'm sure it will be a lot of fun. I was thinking co-ed teams and I know we have some competitive people around town. Plus it will be a fun way to lose a little weight, meet new people and release some stress as teammates hail flying red balls at each other's asses. LoL- Ok... it won't be that vicious; I think...

So, I got together with my friend Alex at MiamiUrbanLife, the Downtown Athletic Club and ECCO Pizzateca to put together our first dodgeball "mash" game during happy hour. How exciting!! There's something about the words Dodgeball and Happy Hour that have a nice ring to it. Urban Dodgeball anyone?

After a couple of days of scrambling, we finally got it together and everything is set for this Friday, December 11, 2009. Now there's only one thing left. Who, of all the buzz talkers will show up?

Anyone got balls?! Ha ha...

As part of a great collaborative effort, I'm proud to say that we're going to be taking it old school! Yes, up against the wall, duck, burn and run!

Only the brave will show if they think they got what it takes. Anyone and everyone is invited!

So here's the final scoop:

We will be playing at the Downtown Athletic Club (DAC) which is located at 200 South Biscayne Blvd in Suite 15A; better known as the Wachovia Financial Center. The DAC has been kind enough to lend us their facility and take care of parking for guests and participants.

Following our first mash game, we will head on over to ECCO (literally down the street) for the dodgeball game after party. Everyone who participates will enjoy 2 for 1 drink specials, along with chill music and a delectable menu. However, only people with an MUL card will get to enjoy the 2 for 1 special from 7:30PM to 9:00PM.

I'm hoping and looking forward to a good turn out and creating a little urban ritual for a different kind of happy hour.

So, if you're interested in playing, just sign up here for DODGEBALL.

2nd Annual Riverwalk & Boat Parade Recap

Thanks to everyone that went and helped make this year's Annual Riverwalk & Boat Parade a success!

The weather was awesome and we had a great turnout. There were lots of local vendors/businesses providing samples of their product/food. I was happy to see families, tourists and visitors of all sorts stop by and get a glimpse of our up and rising community. Downtown has always been known for its hustle and bustle but seldom for the people that live there. Over the past decade we have really seen a boom and expansion in metropolitan living. Even more recently have we began to embrace the community within the city. It's events like this that help stimulate growth and appreciation.

Having spent the middle of my afternoon checking out various booths, I got to see a couple familiar faces and meet some new ones too. My buddy Rob from the Downtown Athletic Center and I took a stroll down the riverwalk to check out what was going on.

We saw a few local restaurants including Rosa Mexicano and Puntino providing delicious samplings of their food.

Rosa Mexicano sampled their delicious and freshly made guacamole:

Thanks everyone for making my belly happy!

We saw the Marlins' Cheerleaders and Billy the Marlin giving out promotional items with their family fun games. Even the Bubba Gump Shrimp came out and showed some love.

Children enjoyed fun little games, face painting, popcorn and cotton candy. I had some cotton candy too- it had been a while. There was even a couple of stands for the pets with boutique gourmet treats.

Visitors got to see all the city boats parade along the river including Mango's boat with its dancers and one of our crowned beauty representatives. The DAC headlined the latter part of the afternoon with an interactive and fun Zumba class which had visitors stepping to that latin beat.

Now if all the music and games were much, My Spa was there to rescue, providing guests with mini massages.

Now you know I had to get one... or two... hee hee- :)

Everyone had a wonderful time and I can't wait for our next Downtown experience!

The Fledgling Initiative- What an awesome approach to support literacy in less fortunate countries.

Fledgling Wine, Room to Read and Twitter have teamed up to extend literacy and educational opportunities to children around the world. In order to promote literacy in some of the world's poorest regions, for every bottle of wine purchased at Fledgling Wine, $5 will be donated to Room to Read who in turn will donate books to various rural communities.

Room to Read started ten years ago in Nepal by Microsoft Executive John Wood. Since then it has grown into a global non-profit organization changing and benefiting the lives of children throughout Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zambia. They have established over 700 schools and over 7,000 bilingual libraries with millions of books. Step by step, donation by donation and bottle of wine, children are receiving a chance to learn how to read and write. They are receiving an education.

Here's your chance to play a part in helping these children receive a chance for a better future while you get a buzz. Simply visit www.fledglingwine.com.

Fabulous coats for fall/winter!

Ok so I've skimming through the internet looking for nice wool coats for the fall/winter. I know Miami doesn't get too much use out of them but I plan on doing some traveling over the next couple of months. So I thought I would share some lovely finds with the ladies.

I miss being in NY. They get a few months to play with all the "keeping warm" trends. The colors, the cuts, textures and prints... gosh I wish Miami had a longer and REAL winter. I mean I love wearing tights and stalkings but how abnormal is it when it's about 42 degrees in the AM and by mid afternoon it's back to 75/80? Sigh... at least I have a couple excuses for the use of a beautiful new coat.

Check out some of the fabulous coats I found. I think Via Spiga really made an impact this year from edgy and contemporary flare to fitted fluff. Tahari surprised me stepping aside from its uber conservative style and sharing a little classic romance. And, Victoria's Secret has a bunch of bold colors and cuts. Can't wait...snow!

Via Spiga- Black Button-down Trench

Via Spiga- Royal Blue Coat

Tahari- Ruffle Trench

Betsey Johnson- Red Cuff Trench

Victorias Secret- Gold/Mustard Trench

Via Spiga- Wool Peplum Coat

Torn- Natalie Imbruglia

I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm
He came around
And he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry

Well you couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know
Or seem to care
What your heart is for
I don't know him anymore

There's nothin' where he used to lie
My conversation has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothings right
I'm torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune tellers right
I should have seen just what was there and not some holy light
But you crawled beneath my veins
And now, I don't care
I have no luck
I don't miss it all that much
There's just so many things
That I can't touch
I'm torn

There's nothin'where he used to lie
My inspiration has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's right
I'm torn

Bold Colors for Corporate Chic!

Loving my ensemble today! Bold colorful accents are great for any time of year.

Mustard yellow patent leather peep toes from Michael Antonio are great accent for the corporate trendy chic. Pair these eye catching heels with a black a-line pencil skirt and black collar or ruffle top and you're ready to go.

Adding a little color to your day helps the smiles go around. Remember yours counts too!

Food For Thought- New Beginings

"Every day is the start of something new and with each new beginning, starts another chapter in our life. Embrace the day, be great and lets write!"

What a great feeling to start something new! Whether a new job, the first day of school, a new hobby or sport- there's this uncanny excitement when life begins to write a new chapter. All we have to do is embrace each new beginning and make the best of it while making the best of ourselves.

Here's to you and the discovery of new things!

Live, learn, love and move forward!

Food for Thought- Our Greatness

"The unique personality which is the real life in me, I cannot gain unless I search for the real life, the spiritual quality, in others. I am myself spiritually dead unless I reach out to the fine quality dormant in others. For it is only with the god enthroned in the innermost shrine of the other, that the god hidden in me, will consent to appear."

By: Felix Adler on the Ethical Philosophy of Life

Whether it's the measure of our success or our own self-worth, we all seek to establish some sort of value on life and the life we live. However, is this measured by our net worth? The numerical figure posted on monthly statements? Or by the number of persons we watch progress, flourish, succeed and become great just by our very own existence, influence and contribution in their life?

I don't believe our greatness should be defined by zeros and dollar figures. I believe our greatness lies in the greatness of others. GOD is great because he created us to learn, grow, create and inspire.  It would only be logical that we would be great by doing the same.  I believe this is where we see the truth of ourselves; our great potential and real being.

After all, Mother Theresa certainly didn't boast millions in her checking account and her bio wasn't featured in Forbes magazine. However, she was undoubtedly a magnificent person for her belief in others and contribution to mankind of all sorts.

This is my aspiration in life. To become great and for the lives I touch to become great with me.

Live, learn, love and move forward!

Being the shoe enthusiast that I am, can't help but be tempted to see
just what kind of shoes may be scattered about here. In spite of
better judgement that things not normally this cheap are probably not
worth looking into, still think this can be a little stop on the way
home.
